GLOSS The Work of Chris von Wangenheim
By Roger Padilha and Mauricio Padilha
GLOSS is the first complete collection of the works by fashion photographer Chris von Wangenheim (1945-1981.) Von Wangenheim’s work was provocative and embodied the glamour and excess of the 1970s. His work was controversial in the then prudish fashion world because his body of work explored sexuality and violence; it was representative of the sexual revolution that occurred during the Studio 54-era. Regardless of the risqué nature of his work, his images were featured in every top fashion publication of the ‘70s including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Interview while he also worked for some of the major fashion houses of the time like Dior and Valentino.
In this collection of his works the Padilha brothers also tell the story of von Wangenheim’s life and have included 200 of his iconic images, including many never-before-seen outtakes from memorable shoots with supermodels such as Christy Brinkley, Lisa Taylor, and the late Gia Carangi.
Although von Wangenheim’s untimely death happened at the peak of his career in 1981, his influence is very much alive in fashion today. This collection of his images and stories about his life will introduce this icon of fashion photography to a new audience and provide longtime fans with a monograph befitting of his extraordinary work.
