Yayoi Kusama to Open Namesake Museum in Tokyo

August 24, 2017 5:00 PM

On your mark, get set, go! Yayoi Kusama enthusiasts will be delighted to know that tickets to the venerated Japanese artist’s namesake museum go on sale August 28. Kusama’s admirers– of which there are nearly as many as the infinitesimal polka dots adorning her works– were thrilled when the news of the new museum broke this month on Spoon and Tamago.

For the uninitiated, Kusama’s repertoire is both dizzyingly comprehensive as well as visually. Repetitive forms and whimsical colors keep the viewers' eyes cartwheeling through her works in almost every preparation. Not only are her works a delight to behold, but Yayoi Kusama is one of Japan’s most celebrated figures in the contemporary art world, and beyond.

Opening October 1, the gleaming, breathtaking five-story space, designed by Kume Sekkei, will house Kusama’s works, rotating installations, an archival reading room and more– in conjunction creating an ambiance as avant garde, yet simultaneously welcoming as her works themselves. The opening exhibition is entitled “Creation Is a Solitary Pursuit, Love Is What Brings You Closer to Art,” and it encompasses the recently completed series of paintings, “My Eternal Soul.”

Based on reception at Kusama exhibitions internationally, the Shinjuku neighborhood based museum can probably expect some crowds– so grab tickets as soon as you can. Tickets will be offered in time slots via the museum website.
