Saint Laurent Paris SS13
"No Smoking,” Karl Lagerfeld recently joked in one of his spontaneous sketches. An obvious fashion insider jest at all the buzz around Hedi Slimane’s debut collection for Yves Saint Laurent (pardon my French, the newly branded Saint Laurent, as per Hedi’s wishes). Slimane’s rock-n-roll mentality always yields agenda-setting aesthetic statements. Remember when he was at the reigns of Dior Homme and transformed the archetypal male silhouette? Prompting Lagerfeld to drop 100 lbs in desperation to fit the new tailored and slim Dior.
Naturally, this season's LeSmoking suit consisted of cigarette leg trousers and sharp lapel jackets. To prevented the unwated gaze, each suit was paired with an oversized hat. The collection closed with a series of jewel-toned maxi dresses with billowing volume, a bewitching take on classic YSL blouses and cocktail dresses. If Slimane’s message wasn’t clear on the runway, it definitely shown through with the new black and white campaign images of supermodel Anja Rubik released just days after the debut show. The new Saint Laurent has only just begun its fashion spell. by Michael Costa
