KILLER HEELS: THE ART OF THE HIGH-HEELED SHOES

November 21, 2014 11:45 AM

If the shoe fits, showcase it.  That’s the motto the Brooklyn Museum is following as it transformed a portion of its gallery into a shoe closet to “explore fashion’s most provocative accessory” with a new exhibit titled Killer Heels: The Art of High-Heeled Shoes.  The exhibit features over 160 historic and contemporary shoes, along with stills, artist statements, and sketches, from designers and design houses like Manolo Blahnik, Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Christian Louboutin, and many more.  To provide a more in-depth look at the shoes, the Brooklyn Museum also commissioned six short films that explore the exhibit’s provocative theme and demonstrates “the power of the high heel in the collective imagination.”

Lisa Smalls, Curator of Exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum, said the show celebrates the high heel as an “icon in popular culture.”  Choosing to focus on the relationship of past and present heels, the exhibit discards chronology and divides the heels into six organized sections: Rising in the East, Architecture, Space Walk, Metamorphosis, Revival and Reinterpretation, and Glamour and Fetish.  Through these themes, Smalls states that Killer Heels doesn’t focus only on the designs but on the history of the shoes.  Smalls hopes the exhibit will “reveal quite a bit about the personal, social, and cultural concerns of the era [the heel] comes from.”

Killer Heels is on display until February 15, 2015.
