Kyaraben

June 10, 2013 1:18 PM

Healthy, gorgeous, and fun, the Japanese culinary art of Kyaraben is sure to attract the more artistic foodies among us. Kyaraben, short for Character Bento, is the art of preparing boxed lunches (Bento) to resemble characters or scenes. Using materials such as: rice, seaweed, vegetables, fish, and meat, mothers and chefs alike can make lunches that range from adorable cartoon characters to highly artistic works of art.

Originally, Kyaraben was intended to encourage children to eat a wider range of food variety. Japanese mothers began designing ascetically pleasing and drop-dead adorable lunches for their children, often featuring animals and popular characters. Don’t you feel a bit silly for being excited when your mom cut the crust off of your pb&j now?

While the history of Bento can be traced back 900 years, Kyaraben is a modern remake of the traditional boxed lunch and has become a sweeping trend, growing well beyond mothers and school children. It takes a dedication to both food and art to create something this beautiful knowing it will be destroyed shortly. The talent and patience that is required to make some of the more elaborate Kyaraben rivals that of even the most skilled painters and sculptors.
